LOCATION:  The shelter is located at 3 Spragueville Road, Smithfield.   Behind the Department of Public Works.  We have two Animal Control Vehicles for responding to animal complaints and transporting animals.

SPAYING & NEUTERING:  We have programs available for spaying and neutering pets at a reduced cost.

WILDLIFE:  There are new rules and regulations regarding wildlife that are now in effect.  We no longer trap any nuisance wildlife (skunks, raccoons, etc.). All nuisance wildlife calls are referred to DEM or private pest control companies.

Annual Rabies Clinic at Smithfield Town Highway Garage (next to shelter), 3 Spragueville Rd. Saturday, April 2nd, 1:00-3:00 pm. Fees: Rabies vaccinations for Cats, Dogs and Ferrets $10.00 CASH ONLY. Town of Smithfield Dog Licensing $8.00. CASH or CHECK Payable to the Town of Smithfield. Proof of a PRIOR-CURRENT rabies vaccination IS REQUIRED for 3 year vaccinations, per order of the RI State Veterinarian in accordance with the new RI Rabies Vaccination Laws. All dogs MUST be on leash and under the owners control at all times. All cats MUST be in carriers. Smithfield Animal Control, 401-233-1055.

 
RABIES VACCINATIONS REMINDER:  Pet owners are reminded to keep their rabies vaccinations current. Rabies clinics are held annually, many vaccinations may have already expired. Take no chances. Please see your veterinarian to update your pet’s shots.

You can call the shelter at 233-1055, if there is no answer you can leave a message.  If you are reporting an emergency, please contact the Smithfield Police Department at 231-2500 and they will be able to reach an Animal Control Warden.

When is the shelter open?
The shelter is open seven (7) days a week:

  • Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

What are the procedures for adopting a pet?
A thirty dollar ($30.00) refundable deposit is required and you must sign the following two (2) contracts:

  • Rabies vaccination required within fourteen (14) days;
  • Agree to have the animal spayed or neutered within thirty (30) days. (Per state law).

What are the most frequent calls for animal control?

  • Wild cats;
  • Animal Bites;
  • Loose dogs;
