On September 16, 2002, Officer Robert Squillante, “Officer Bob,” was
transferred into the Smithfield Police Department Community Policing Unit.
Officer Bob has been with the Smithfield Police Department since 1993. On
September 18, 2006, Officer Orlando Braxton, “Officer Orlando,” was
transferred into the Smithfield Police Department Community Policing Unit.
Officer Orlando has been with the Smithfield Police Department since 1999.
He is the newest DARE Officer. Officers Bob and Orlando are the two
Community Programs Officers who are DARE instructors as well as the officers
who work in community oriented programs such as: Senior Citizens Police
Advocacy, Occupant Protection Usage and Enforcement (child restraint seat
installation and seatbelt instruction), R.U.O.K. Program, Smithfield Law
Enforcement Explorers. The Smithfield Police Department believes that
community programs like these are making a positive difference in the lives
of Smithfield residents of all ages.
D.A.R.E. TO BE FIT BIKE RIDE

On Saturday, October 7, 2006,
the Smithfield Police Department Community Police Unit sponsored the first
DARE To Be Fit Bike Ride, held at the Deerfield Park Pavilion. Over 100
students and their parents participated in the bike ride, which took
participants off road through the campuses of the Smithfield High School,
Anna McCabe School, Gallagher Middle School and Deerfield Park.
D.A.R.E. SKATING PARTY

In December of 2006, the Smithfield
Police Department sponsored a fifth grade DARE ice skating party at the
Smithfield Municipal ice rink with funds from the Cops That Care grant. Over
150 fifth grade students attended this event. Refreshments were provided for
the students. The Smithfield Ice Rink donated ice time, and the fifth grade
parents were instrumental in making this program a big success.
D.A.R.E. HOST “RETRO BILL”

On Friday, February 16, 2007, the
Smithfield Police Department DARE Officers hosted “Retro Bill,” the official
safety buddy of DARE—Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Retro Bill performed
his nationally renowned, energetic message on safety, self-esteem and living
drug free, internet safety, bullying and other topics. The event consisted
of four shows presented to all Smithfield elementary students, Gallagher
Middle School students and culminated with an evening family show.
D.A.R.E. ROLE MODELS

During March 2007, students from the
Smithfield High School accompanied the DARE Officers to the 5th
grade DARE classes. Student “Role Model” spoke about the importance of
education and having goals. Their message of living a chemical-free and
violence-free lifestyle was heard loud and clear by the students.

D.A.R.E students participated in pre-game ceremonies on the field during
D.A.R.E night on May 7th, 2004 as the Pawtucket Red
Sox hosted the Norfolk Tides. |

| In December of 2004, the

grade students attended the event. Refreshments were
provided for the students, along with a raffle ticket for
prizes. The prizes included three mountain bikes, gift
certificates, CD player and other gifts. Ice time was
donated by the Smithfield Ice Rink, and the fifth grade
parents were instrumental in making the program a big
