The
new Smithfield Police Department maintenance garage went into service in
June of 2004. Construction of this garage began in the fall of 2003 and
continued through the winter. The 46’ x 46’ garage has two bays, 16 ft
ceilings, and can easily store four cruisers for various types of
maintenance. The garage also has two hydraulic lifts and ample space for
tools and equipment needed to keep the fleet in top running condition.
Completion of the maintenance garage was an important first step in
maximizing space within police headquarters. The space formerly utilized
as the department’s garage is currently being converted into a new
holding facility area. Relocating the new holding facility to the police
station’s lower level will create a safer working environment for
civilian employees and sworn officers and assist the department in
complying with standards established by the Commission on Accreditation
for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).
