The Smithfield Police Department has recently
purchased a four-wheel, all-terrain vehicle to subsidize their
enforcement efforts. The Department, acting on the growing number of
off-road complaints, elected to purchase a new all-terrain vehicle. As
part of a pilot program, the department has trained and assigned several
officers to begin patrolling off-road areas. The program kicked off on
May 27th, 2006.

The Officers will be operating the
Yamaha Rhino 660, a four-wheel drive vehicle that seats two officers and
is similar in shape and design to a golf-cart This vehicle was recently
tested by officers and was found to exceed all expectations in the area
of off-road operation. Additionally, this vehicle is available to
assist other town agencies and departments requiring its off-road
capabilities.

The Smithfield Police Off-Road Patrol
Program consists of 6 Smithfield Police Department members. The 6
member team currently patrols and monitors off-road activities within
Smithfield. The 6 member team consists of two Lieutenants, one Sergeant
and three patrol officers. For more information on the Off-Road Patrol
Program, please contact Lieutenant Alberto Fetta (401-231-2500) or
