  • On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, Smithfield police responded to a local convenience store on Douglas Pike to investigate the report of a larceny. On scene, police learned that a customer had accidentally left his wallet on the counter, and when he returned, it was no longer there. An investigation revealed that an employee had taken the wallet.  Police arrested Peter Moscarelli, age 79, of 74 Lancashire Street, Providence, for larceny over $500. He was transported to the police station where he was processed. He appeared before Judge Walter Gorman in District Court and was released on $1,000 personal recognizance.
     

  • On March 28th, 2008, police received a complaint of embezzlement from a local business on Farnum Pike. An investigation revealed that an employee had fraudulently obtained money, goods and services. On Thursday, April 24th, 2008, Smithfield police arrested Sharon Lagerstrom, age 49, of 39 Ethel Street, West Warwick, on the charges of embezzlement and possession of Vicodin. She was taken into custody and processed at the police station. She was transported to District Court, where she appeared before Judge Michael Higgins. She was released on $5,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Court on May 8th, 2008.
     

  • On March 18, 2008, at approximately 9:38 a.m., Smithfield police responded to Rhode Island Historical Cemetery #98, located on Harris Road, to investigate the report of vandalism. On scene, police learned that several grave stones had been tipped over and that the damage appeared to be recent.  

    Through an extensive investigation, Detective Christopher Taylor, arrested Zachary Mountford, age 20, of 18 Pleasant View Avenue, Smithfield, Matthew Houle, age 19, of 218 Harris Road, Smithfield, and Nicholas Dauphinais, age 18, of 1805 Mineral Spring Avenue Apt. 13, North Providence. 

    The three subjects were arrested and charged with desecration of places of public assemblage and conspiracy, both felonies. They were processed and released with summonses to appear in District Court on April 24, 2008, to answer the charges.
     

  • On Friday, March 21, 2008, at 8:00 p.m., Smithfield police arrested Kyle Thompson, age 22, of 21 Danecroft Avenue, for the sale of alcoholic beverages to underage persons. 

    At 7:05 p.m., Sergeant Julio Medeiros was assigned to a DWI/underage drinking patrol and observed a known underage male subject enter a liquor establishment on Putnam Pike. The subject exited with alcoholic beverages and returned to his vehicle. The vehicle was stopped and the nineteen-year-old operator admitted to purchasing alcohol without any identification. The operator was released with a summons to appear in the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal on April 28, 2008, to answer the charge of transporting alcoholic beverages by an underage person.  

    Police responded to the liquor establishment and arrested Kyle Thompson, who sold the liquor. He was served with a summons to appear in District Court on April 20, 2008.
     

  • On Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 12:45 a.m., Smithfield police arrested Benjamin Johnson, age 26, of 80 Bungy Road, North Scituate for driving while intoxicated. 

    At 12:33 a.m., police received a call to investigate a traffic collision on Farnum Pike. Responding officers located an overturned vehicle, in which Johnson was attempting to exit. Officer Carson Orellana noted that Johnson emitted a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and had slurred speech. Johnson then failed several field sobriety tests. He was taken to Fatima Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and consented to a blood test. Upon being released from the hospital, Johnson was transported to police headquarters where he was processed. He was released with a summons to appear in District Court on on April 3, 2008, to answer the charge.
     

  • On Monday, March 17, 2008, Smithfield police arrested Raymond Provencal, age 38, of 235 Mt. Pleasant Road, Burrillville, and on March 19, 2008, police arrested Michael Ducharme, age 41, of 685 East Avenue, Warwick, for motor vehicle theft, larceny over $500, felony conspiracy and malicious damage to property. 

    On February 6, 2008, Smithfield police responded to a construction site on Douglas Pike to investigate the report of a motor vehicle theft and the larceny of copper wire and two window units. After a month-long investigation, detectives took Provencal into custody without incident. He was processed and appeared before Judge Michael Higgins. He was released on $10,000 personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in District Court on May 19, 2008. Ducharme is currently incarcerated at the ACI on unrelated charges and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court on May 22, 2008.
     

  • On March 18, 2008, at 2:45 a.m., Smithfield and North Providence police arrested Arthur Godette, age 36, of 11 Maple Avenue, Smithfield, and Lindsey Donahue, age 20, of 84 Farm Street, Providence. Both subjects were charged with driving without consent of owner and conspiracy. At 3:55 p.m., Smithfield police arrested Christopher Fortin, age 24, of 11 Esmond Street for driving without consent of owner, duty to stop in an accident resulting in personal injury or death, eluding a police officer and reckless driving.  

    On March 18, 2008, at 2:38 a.m., Sergeant Julio Medeiros observed a vehicle traveling north on Waterman Avenue at a high rate of speed, with heavy front end damage, no lights and only three tires. The vehicle matched the description of one that fled the scene of an earlier accident resulting in injuries to the operator. Police attempted to halt the vehicle, but it fled through side streets off of Waterman Avenue and eventually into the Town of North Providence. After a brief pursuit, the vehicle sustained heavy damage after colliding with multiple fixed objects. The operator, later identified as Christopher Fortin, fled the scene on foot. The two passengers, identified as Godette and Donahue, also fled the scene and were apprehended by Smithfield and North Providence officers after a brief foot pursuit.  

    Godette was taken to Smithfield police headquarters, where he was processed. He was later arraigned in Sixth Division District Court before Judge Michael Higgins and held on $10,000 cash bail as a Superior Court violator of a previously imposed sentence. Godette also had an outstanding bench warrant from District Court for failure to appear. 

    Donahue was taken from the scene to Smithfield police headquarters where she was processed. She was later arraigned at Sixth Division District Court before Judge Michael Higgins, who released her on $10,000 surety bail.  

    Fortin was arrested after police received a tip of his whereabouts. He was taken into custody and arraigned before Bail Commissioner Richard Kirby, who released him on $5,000 cash bail. He was remanded to the Adult Correctional Institution and held as a Superior Court violator. He is scheduled to appear in Sixth Division District Court on March 19, 2008 for a bail hearing.
     

  • On Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at 8:52 a.m., Smithfield police arrested John J. Carlton, age 34, of 305 Cowesett Avenue, West Warwick, for two counts of felony shoplifting, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

    At 8:13 a.m., loss prevention personnel from the Home Depot contacted police and informed them that they were watching a subject who had stolen several hundred dollars worth of merchandise the prior day. Police were alerted to a parked vehicle in front of the store that was running. Police met loss prevention personnel who followed Carlton out of the store with additional unpaid merchandise. A brief struggle ensued with loss prevention personnel resulting in one of them being assaulted. Carlton was placed under arrest by police and transported to the station where he was processed and charged. 

    He was later taken to the Sixth Division District Court and released on $10,000 surety bail. He was held as a Superior Court violator and is scheduled to appear on March 18, 2008, for a pre-trial conference.
     

  • On Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 2:30 p.m., Smithfield police arrested a sixteen-year-old female for felony assault with a dangerous weapon. 

    At 2:15 p.m., Smithfield officers were summoned by fire personnel to the Farnum House group home at 445 Farnum Pike to investigate an assault. Police arrived on scene to find a staff worker with severe facial injuries resulting from an assault by a juvenile resident. Officers arrested the female juvenile and transported her to the station where she was processed and later transported to the Rhode Island Training School by order of Family Court Judge Haiganush Bedrosian. 

    The juvenile is scheduled to appear in the Sixth Division Family Court on March 7, 2008 for a probable cause hearing.
     

  • On Friday, January 25, 2008, at 12:20 a.m., Smithfield police stopped a vehicle on Putnam Pike for a motor vehicle violation. On scene, the operator showed signs of intoxication.  She was asked to perform several field sobriety tests--all of which she failed.  Smithfield police arrested Samantha Daigle, age 18, of 12 Beverly Circle and charged her with driving under the influence of liquor.  
     

  • On Friday, January 25, 2008, at 12:42 a.m., police responded to the parking lot of a local liquor store to investigate the report of a suspicious vehicle. Sergeant Julio F. Medeiros responded to the area and was nearly struck by a vehicle exiting the parking lot. The operator of the vehicle was asked to perform several field sobriety tests--all of which he failed. Smithfield police arrested Joshua Thibodeau, age 19, of 205 Town Farm Road, Pascoag, and charged him with driving under the influence of liquor. The passenger, Kayla Metcalf, age 18, of 46 Beverly Circle, was found to be in possession of alcohol. She was also taken into custody and charged with possession of alcohol by an underage person.
