POLICE OFFICER RECRUITMENT

Position Title:  Police Officer

Purpose:  To establish a 1-year eligibility list for police officers from July 1st, 2008 to June 30th, 2009, that may be extended at the discretion of the Town Manager. There exist no current vacancies at this time.   The recruitment and selection process takes approximately five months to complete.  Previous candidates interested in applying must complete a new application.

Recruitment Period:  January 15, 2008 through February 29th, 2008

Selection Period:   February 29th, 2008 through June 30th, 2008

Eligibility Period:   July 1st, 2008 through June 30th, 2009

Background:  The Town of Smithfield is located in Northern Rhode Island. It was founded in 1730, covers 27.8 square miles and is home to approximately 20,000 residents. Its police department was established in 1950. In 1972, the department built its headquarters in a two-level building on four acres overlooking the picturesque Stillwater Reservoir. 

The Smithfield Police Department is a proactive, progressive police department committed to a community policing philosophy. It provides its police officers with a minimum of forty hours of basic, annual, in-service training, along with other advanced and specialized training opportunities. 

The Smithfield Police Department is nationally accredited and currently has an authorized strength of forty-one sworn police officers. 

Position Description:  Protect life and property, maintain public order, investigate criminal and non-criminal activities, arrest traffic and criminal violators, collect and preserve evidence, deliver crime prevention and community services, other law enforcement-related services.  

Minimum Requirements:   

·         Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older;

·         Must be a citizen of the United States;

·         Must possess a valid operator’s license;

·         Must possess a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the field of Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement, by June 30th, 2008.

Selection Process:  The selection process takes approximately five (5) months to complete. The applicants meeting the minimum basic requirements must successfully complete the following phases of the selection process: 

  • Written Examination, which measures memory, verbal ability, ability to learn and apply police information, follow directions, use good judgment and logic;
  • Physical Fitness Test, which encompasses the following:  300 Meter Run, Sit and Reach Test, One Minute Sit-up Test, One Repetition Maximum Bench Press and a 1.5 Mile Run;
  • Background Investigation;
  • Oral Review Boards;
  • Psychological Examination;
  • Medical Examination.

Salary and Benefits:   

·         A first year patrol officer receives an annual salary of $40,098.24 ($771.12 per week);

·         Health care benefits with 20% co-pay, not to exceed $1,400.00 annually are provided.

Recruit Training Requirements:  Must successfully complete the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy, a physical conditioning, hand-to-hand combat, defensive tactics, basic water safety, pursuit and defensive driving courses, and qualify with a department-issued service weapon.
