In April of 2002, the United States Department
of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced
the availability of federal funds to deploy sworn officers (School Resource
Officers) as part of an overall plan to address school related crime through
community policing. In September of 2002, the Department received notice of
its grant award of $125,000 for this School Resource Officer position.
Officer Joseph Marcello was selected as the
Department’s first School Resource Officer. Following mandatory training, he
began his assignment at the Smithfield High School in the fall of 2003 and
has remained there for the 2003/2004, 2004/2005, & 2006/2007 school years. |
